Iran slams Japan unilateral sanctions

Tehran slams Tokyo’s move to impose unilateral sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, saying such measures will be ineffective.

“Any country which imposes sanctions against the Iranian nation will definitely deprive itself of exploiting Iran’s high potential,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Sunday.

“By taking such measures, these countries not only will cause problems for their own companies and national interests, but also will pave the way for the presence of their rival states,” Mehmanparast was quoted by IRNA as saying.

In addition to the United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran, Japan has imposed unilateral measures on the Islamic Republic which include banning new investments in energy-related industries and imposing a limit on trade insurance.

Mehmanparast described the UN sanctions resolutions against Iran as “illegal and unfair.”

“The UN imposed sanctions just because the Iranian nation seeks to exercise its right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. This is the only reason that Iranians are faced with illegal and unfair sanctions of the Security Council, [which is] a result of pressure by the US and certain Western countries,” he said.

After the UN Security Council issued a resolution imposing a fourth round of sanctions on Iran in June, the United States and the European Union imposed their own unilateral sanctions.

Tehran rejects the allegation that it seeks to develop nuclear weapons and has asserted that its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes, such as the development of the country’s energy and medical infrastructure.
