Iran stages first regulated drag race in Anzali Free Trade Zone

Gilan Tourism and Racing Association has staged Iran’s  first organized and regulated 0-400m drag race south of the Caspian Sea, and the contest pitted dozens of competitors from various corners of the country against one another.

“The drag race was held in Anzali Free Trade Zone and in seven classes, including 0-400m….The overall level of the competition was so high, and the event attracted some 100 participants from different parts of the country,” Mohsen Vahedi, head of the association, said.

He added, “We hope that Gilan’s purpose-built automobile racing circuit is inaugurated as soon as possible, so the high number of speed enthusiasts and car aficionados here is moved to a standard complex to ensure public entrainment, security and cultural nourishment.”

Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly 402 meters.

Each driver is allowed to perform a burnout before each race. S/he heats the driving tires and lays rubber down at the beginning of the track, improving traction. Each driver then lines up at the starting line.

Once one competitor is staged, their opponent has a set amount of time to stage or they will be instantly disqualified by a red light on an electronic system known as a Christmas tree.

Otherwise, the system chooses a short delay at random once both drivers are staged, and starts the race.
