The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss chargé d’affaires to Tehran in protest over the use of chemical weapons by the foreign-backed Syria militants in the northwestern city of Aleppo, which left at least 25 people dead.
According to Press TV, during a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Director General for Political and International Affairs Mohsen Naziri voiced Iran’s strong condemnation of the chemical attack in Syria, holding countries supporting Syria militants accountable for the incident.
Naziri noted: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has frequently warned against such crimes. It strongly urges the US government to prevent chemical weapons from falling into the hands of Syria rebels.”
The senior Iranian diplomat also stressed the need for an impartial probe into the use of chemical weapons in the attack near Aleppo.
The Swiss chargé d’affaires, for his part, assured the Iranian official that Iran’s message would be conveyed to Washington as soon as possible and that a response would be relayed back to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
At least 25 people were killed and 86 others injured after militants fired missiles containing poisonous gas into Aleppo’s Khan al-Assal village on Tuesday. Women and children are reported to be among the victims.
The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
