Iran to Dispatch More Humanitarian Aids to Somalia

Iran’s Red Crescent Society plans to send more humanitarian aid cargos to the Somali people as the North African country is fighting drought and famine.
“Two cargoes of humanitarian aids from Iran’s Red Crescent Society will be sent to help the famine-hit Somali people son,” Head of the Society’s Relief and Rescue Organization Mahmoud Mozaffar told FNA on Sunday.

Mozaffar added that each of the two aid cargoes weighs 40 tons and is comprised of foodstuffs, including cereals and rice, which will be sent to Mogadishu on Monday.

Iran has repeatedly announced its support for the people of Somalia, stressing that it would spare no effort to help the Somalis survive the tragic situation.

More than 1.5 million Somalis have been internally displaced by a tug of war among the armed factions in the African country, which has been without an effective central government since the overthrow of the country’s former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

The UN has declared famine in five areas in Southern Somalia, warning that, without urgent intervention, the food crisis could engulf the entire southern areas.
