Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called for a global front against the growing threats of extremism.

“The objectives of the extremist groups are political and they merely resort to religious claims. Therefore, it is necessary for all to unite against extremism,” Zarif said at a Monday meeting with Tunisian Ambassador to Tehran Zitouni.

“The extremist movements within and outside the Muslim world have created major threats and unfortunately we are witnessing the same actions in Syria and Iraq,” he added.

The Iranian foreign minister noted that the actions of the Takfiri groups in Iraq have proved that their crimes do not differentiate between Shia and Sunnis.

While Lebanon and Syria have been the scenes of deadly string of bomb attacks by al-Qaeda-linked terrorist networks, the Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in Anbar province have also been witnessing deadly clashes between security forces and Takfiri militants over the past days.

Zarif praised Tunisia as a flag bearer of the progressive movement and underscored Iran’s resolve to promote ties with the North African country.

Zitouni, for his part, underlined the need for expansion of Tehran-Tunis ties, particularly in economic and cultural fields and expressed optimism that the two countries will promote their relations in various areas in the future.
