Iran wants nuclear weapons-free world

The Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expounds on Iran’s nuclear policy, saying Tehran wants a world without atomic weapons.

Speaking to ISNA, Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh said Iran is pursuing the policy of the “full elimination” of nuclear arsenals.

He also urged the IAEA, during its meeting last Friday, to remember the US atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

This week marks the 64th anniversary of those attacks, which killed a quarter of a million people.

Soltaniyeh said the IAEA meeting had issued a statement condemning the US over the deadly bombings.

He added that the group had also expressed concern regarding the world’s 27,000 nuclear weapons and the nine countries possessing nuclear arms.

IAEA members emphasized the importance of the “full elimination of nuclear weapons,” the Iranian diplomat concluded.
