Iran warns US against irreversible action

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warns his American counterpart that by slapping new sanctions against Iran, he will no longer be able to mend relations with the country.

“I told a reporter, with an American network, that certain parties want to push US President Barack Obama to either adopt an irreversible stance against Iran, or pass a resolution against it — and this would mean the end of America,” Ahmadinejad said Monday.

“I stressed there that Iran is Obama’s best and simplest chance and that the key to resolving conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine is also Iran,” he was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying.

Speaking at a ceremony in Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University on Monday, the president linked the Western accusations over the country’s nuclear program to Iran’s “amazing” scientific progress.

“Our nuclear program or uranium enrichment is not important to the West. Rather, they are upset that Iran is reaching the pinnacles of success one by one,” Ahmadinejad stressed.

“Today Iran has turned into a guiding sign and it is the point of hope for other countries. Making efforts to construct Iran is, in other words, efforts made to improve the whole of humanity.”

The remarks come as Washington and its allies have intensified efforts to pass the sanctions, despite opposition from several UNSC members — including veto-wielding China — that a diplomatic solution is possible.

Iran has recently signaled interest in proposals put forward by non-permanent UNSC members Brazil and Turkey concerning a nuclear fuel swap to end the standoff.

Tehran has repeatedly denied accusations that its nuclear program is a smokescreen for developing nuclear weapons, citing its right to a civilian nuclear program as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
