Iran will remain an active IAEA member state, NPT signatory

Ali Asghar Soltanieh
The Iranian ambassador to the UN nuclear agency has said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will remain an active member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
According to the Mehr News Agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh made the remarks at the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which started on April 22 at the United Nations Office in Geneva and will close on May 3. This meeting is the second of three sessions that will be held prior to the 2015 Review Conference.

The Iranian ambassador also said that Iran was fully committed to the NPT and regarded the IAEA as the only authority that had jurisdiction to verify nuclear activities of member states.

In addition, he said, “Iran has disappointed the United States and a number of Western countries that made miscalculations in their predictions and hoped that Iran would withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty after the UN Security Council’s intervention and the imposition of sanctions.”
