Iran’s interior minister has expressed the Islamic Republic’s willingness to resolve regional issues, particularly the crisis in Yemen, in cooperation with Pakistan.

“We are willing to have necessary cooperation with Pakistan in the settlement of regional issues, particularly issues of Yemen,” Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said in a Sunday ceremony marking Pakistan’s National Day in Tehran, attended by representatives from different countries.

Saudi Arabia’s air campaign against Yemen started on March 26 without a UN mandate in a bid to restore power to the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Rahmani Fazli said that the question of Yemen is an internal issue which should be addressed through political channels.

Saudi Arabia has called on Pakistan to join the Kingdom in its aerial assault against Yemen.

The administration of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has supported the aggression, but has refrained from joining the airstrikes.

The Iranian minister further described Iran and Pakistan as two friendly neighboring countries with cultural, religious and historical commonalities, calling for the promotion of political, economic and cultural relations between the two Muslim states.

He added that Tehran is seriously following up on agreements signed with Pakistan in all fields, including fighting terrorism, drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Pakistani Ambassador to Tehran Noor Mohammad Jadmani, who was present in the event, hailed Tehran-Islamabad relations, expressing hope that bilateral ties will further expand.
