Video- Aussies protest as part of global occupy movement

A protest organized by Occupy Sydney took place on Saturday as part of the global occupy movement.

With their presence firmly established in Martin Place, the financial hub of Sydney, the protest marks the end of the first week of their occupation. The occupy movement in Australia has been attended by a wide spectrum of Australian society who believe the system both domestically and internationally is broken.

Protesters here say they are not alone, that they are joined by millions of people around the world who make up the 1600 occupations globally who are fed up with corporate greed that has led to the economic and other disparities that continue to widen year by year.

A number of speakers addressed the global crisis that has hurt many communities, stressing the need to for global solidarity in order to bring about solutions brought upon by current political and economic systems.

The protesters here say the global Occupy movement was inevitable resulting from a failed economic system that has created the current global financial crisis whereby the minority are bailed out and the 99% as they have described themselves, continue to pay the price.

While the gap between rich and poor in Australia continues to widen, those most affected by economic inequality are indigenous communities throughout the country.

The police have threatened to move or arrest the activists occupying Martin Place on a number of occasions during the week. The police have confiscated outdoor cooking equipment and tents early in the week. The occupiers say they will not be moved and will remain until there is an end to corruption and corporate greed both in Australia and around the world.
