Iranian and Syrian Parliament Spekers call for exercising pressure on countries backing terrorism

20140217-195544_h528660Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham and Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, Ali Larijani discussed bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation, and the preparations for the 9th session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUOICM).

The two sides stressed the importance of bolstering and invigorating parliamentary work and joint coordination in the interests of the two countries and nations.

They condemned the terrorist practices of groups that are receiving funds and weapons, underlining the necessity of practicing pressure on the countries that are backing terrorists to alter their course.

The two sides emphasized the necessity of ending violence, extremism and terrorism in Syria and exerting efforts for a political solution based on Syrian-Syrian dialogue.

Al-Laham reviewed the dimensions of the global war waged against Syria that brought terrorists from 83 countries. ”They are methodically targeting the innocent civilians, institutions and infrastructure for weakening the Syrian state and the axis of resistance, in service of the US-Zionist scheme.”

Syria is serious about fighting terrorism and rebuilding what has been ravaged by the terrorist war, al-Laham said. ”And is equally serious about making Geneva 2 conference a success that must emphasize the necessity of combating terrorism, violence and extremism and stem bloodshed in Syria,” he added.

He affirmed that the Syrian government is giving great care to humanitarian issues and delivering aid to all affected areas in Syria, and is making big strides in national reconciliation as to consolidate national dialogue and unity.

Al-Laham thanked the Iranian people and government for their support to Syria, saying that ”targeting Syria is a targeting of resistance in the region.”

Larijani, for his part, reiterated Iran’s support to Syria in the war against it, indicating that ”Syria is at the resistance front line in the region and is now paying the price for its stances that reject outside dictates.”

He hailed the achievements and victories of the Syrian Arab army on the battlefield.

”The wisdom of the Syrian people will foil conspiracies,” he affirmed.

In a different context, al-Laham met the Lebanese Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, discussing with him the topics listed on the Conference’s agenda and the importance of exerting synchronized efforts to confront terrorism and extremism.

The two sides underscored the role of Islamic parliamentarians in defending the causes of Muslim nations, especially the Palestinian cause, and deepening noble Islamic values.

Al-Laham said the Syrian government is confronting terrorism with one hand and rebuilding what has been destroyed by terrorists with the other.

The People’s Assembly seeks, through its participation in the meetings of the Union of the OIC Member States, to bring the viewpoints of parliaments and Muslim Shura Councils closer regarding the key Muslim issues, al-Laham added.

He reaffirmed commitment to preparing a common ground for cooperation among Muslim countries, soaring above differences and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

He said Syria rejects all forms of terrorism and emphasizes abidance by the OIC’s 1999 Convention on Combating Terrorism.

”How can Muslim countries fund Jabhat al-Nusra, Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and other terrorist groups that bear al-Qaeda thought for targeting innocent civilians in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon?,” al-Laham wondered, considering it a violation of the UN Security Council counterterrorism resolutions.

Syria is participating in the 9th session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUOICM) with a Parliamentary delegation headed by al-Laham.
