Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three month “state of emergency” around the country on Wednesday, following the attempted coup to overthrow his regime last Friday.

Citing Article 120 of the Turkish Constitution, the state of emergency effectively began after Erdogan’s announcement; it will conclude on October 20th.

The state of emergency was put in place after the Turkish authorities arrested several thousand people for allegedly taking part in the attempted military coup.
