Iranian delegation attending SPIEF 2011

A delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran is participating in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Russia.

Over a thousand delegates and representatives from seventy countries gathered in Russia’s second largest city, the Press TV correspondent in Russia reported.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev addressed the inaugural ceremony of the 15th edition of the annual event on Friday.

The theme of SPIEF 2011 is Emerging Leadership for a New Era, and it has three sub-themes, namely Securing Global Growth, Building Russia’s Creative Capital, and Expanding Technology Horizons.

Besides business opportunities in Russia, this year the forum also focuses on the economic opportunities in all emerging markets in Europe and Asia.

Over 50 heads of states and governments, including Chinese President Hu Jintao, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, and Finnish President Tarja Halonen, attended the opening ceremony of the three-day event.

SPIEF is the largest annual economic summit in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Central and Eastern Europe and is also called the “Russian Davos.” The forum has been held in St. Petersburg every June since 1997.
