Iranian Lawmaker Lambasts Arab League’s Unfair Policy towards Syria

A1132637A senior Iranian parliamentarian lashed out at the Arab League for its unfair policy on Syria, while adopting passive stances in dealing with other Arab world issues.

“During its history, Arab League has always tried to adopt passive stances regarding the developments in the Arab world,” member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Ebrahim Aqamohammadi told parliament’s news agency on Sunday.

He said that the Arab League’s failure to help the Palestinians against the atrocities and crimes of Israel is clear proof of the fact that the body is not serving the interests of Arabs and Muslims.

“Arab League’s recognition of the Syrian opposition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people is in line with its policies to isolate Assad in the Arab world,” he added.

During their meeting in Cairo on Wednesday, Arab League foreign ministers discussed whether to give Syria’s seat at the bloc to the opposition Syrian National Coalition provided that it first forms a representative executive council.

The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership at the Cairo-based bloc in November 2011.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

In October 2011, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.
