Iranian candidates for the upcoming City Councils elections have begun campaigning for the June 14 polls.

Candidates can continue campaigning within the framework of electoral laws until the eve of the elections day.

Election officials say special inspectors have been charged with monitoring more than 67,000 polling stations nationwide.

Over 200,000 candidates have been qualified to run for both city and rural council seats.

More than 126,000 seats are up for grab in Iran’s Islamic councils elections which coincide with the country’s 11th presidential vote.

The city and village Islamic councils are local establishments that are elected by public vote in all cities and villages across the country. Council members in each city or village are elected for a four-year term.

The councils are tasked with helping the Islamic Republic’s social, economic, cultural and educational advancement by encouraging public participation in social affairs.
