A senior Iranian official has criticized the US for pursuing double standards in its so-called fight against terrorism in Syria.

“The Americans and the coalition set up to fight terrorism have taken no serious action in Syria and are still following dual policies,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting with Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, the UN deputy special envoy for Syria, in Tehran on Monday.

He underscored the necessity of serious action by all countries in the fight on terrorism in Syria and across the Middle East region.

The UN envoy, for his part, commended Iran’s efforts in establishing a truce in some Syrian regions including the key southwestern city of Zabadani and the two villages of al-Fou’a and Kefraya in northwestern Syria.

Ramzy said Iran is instrumental in finding a solution to ongoing crisis in Syria.

A six month truce was agreed in September between the Syrian government and militant groups to bring peace to the besieged Zabadani and the two villages in Idlib province.

Ramzy further said the UN intends to set up political committees comprising all Syrian parties in an effort to prepare the ground for national dialog in the Arab country.

He emphasized that only the Syrian people must make decisions about their country’s future.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The crisis has claimed lives of more than 250,000 people so far and displaced millions.
