The Italian capital has witnessed protest against government cutbacks in the education sector.

The demonstrators are protesting against proposed spending cuts in the 2014 budget and are calling for greater investment in the education sector.

A large number of riot police monitored the protest, tagging along with the demonstrators.

Italian farmers have also staged rallies outside the parliament to protest the policies that allow food imports, used to make classic Italian products such as pasta and mozzarella cheese.

During nationwide protest events on Wednesday and Thursday, farmers also set up a picket at a border point in the Alps, inspecting incoming trucks carrying a variety of foodstuffs such as Lithuanian meat products, German mozzarella and Austrian wheat, which they say are eventually sold as Italian goods.

Last month, official data showed that Italy’s economy had entered its third year of recession after its gross national product continued to contract in the third quarter of the year.

The National Statistics Office, Istat, reported that Italy’s gross national product shrank by 0.1 percent in the July-to-September period, marking the ninth quarterly contraction in a row.
