Iran’s envoy calls for unity of all Iraqi groups

An Iranian diplomat on Friday called for unity among all Iraqi groups and social communities, including Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

Speaking in a local gathering in Al-Amareh in the southern province of Maysan, Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi hailed the role of Iraqi Ulema, particularly the top Shia cleric Ayatollah Sistani, in the fight against Daesh terrorists.

He stressed Iran’s solidarity with Iraqi government and nation in the fight against terrorism.

Touching upon Iran-Iraq brotherly relations, Masjedi underlined that the two countries have vast capacities and potentials to expand bilateral cooperation in the economic, cultural and social arenas.

He added all members of the Iraqi groups including the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Badr Organization and the Islamic Dawa Party, that are doing their best for the progress of their country and tackling terrorism, are Muslims and brother.

On July 11, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared complete liberation of the city of Mosul, former Daesh stronghold from Takfiri terrorists.

Mosul fell in June 2014, when Daesh in an attack took control of the city. Iraqi forces launched the operation to retake Mosul on October 16, 2016.
