Iran’s Mashad scene of rally against rioters

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians in the northeastern city of Mashad on Thursday morning poured to the streets to denounce the recent unrests in the city and other parts of the country.

The residents of Mashad gathered in the Shohada Square, one of the main squares of the city, chanting slogans in support of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Iran was the scene of a wave of unrest in Mashad and some other cities in recent days. The unrest began with protest against economic hardships, but was escalated due to provocations orchestrated from outside the country.

Some senior officials of the Khorasan Razavi, including the representative of the Jurisprudent (Velayat-e Faqih) and the Friday prayer leader of Mashad, also participated in Thursday’s demonstration.

Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad-Ali Jafari on Wednesday evening declared the end of the unrest, dubbed as ‘Sedition 96’, saying that defensive and security threats against Iran do not work anymore.
