The new Qatari ruler has described Iran as an influential country in the region and called for the expansion of ties between Tehran and Doha in various areas.
Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in the Qatari capital of Doha on Saturday.

The Qatari ruler also called on Tehran to use its influence to help settle regional problems.

The senior Iranian diplomat, for his part, congratulated Sheikh Tamim on his recent appointment as emir and called for bolstering relations in various sectors.

Salehi also underscored the need to promote stability and security in the Persian Gulf region and called for more cooperation between regional countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Salehi spelled out Iran’s policy toward Syria, saying that efforts should be made to pave the way for holding political talks between different Syrian groups to resolve the ongoing conflict.

He added that the demands of the Syrian people should be met and the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty should be respected.

Salehi also called on Muslim scholars to promote pure Islamic views and respect Muslims of all sects in order to prevent sectarian strife.
