Iraqi Army crushes ISIS offensive to capture Syrian border-crossing

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched an offensive on Monday to capture the Al-Walid border-crossing from the Iraqi Armed Forces after losing this site to the latter last week.

ISIS began their offensive by attacking the Iraqi Army’s defenses from the Syrian province of Al-Sweida; this assault would last for nearly three hours on Monday.

Following several infiltration attempts, the Islamic State ended their offensive at the Al-Walid border-crossing, leaving the Iraqi Army in full control of this strategic point near the Al-Anbar Governorate.

In addition to this attack, the Islamic State also attacked the key desert village of Rutbah; however, this assault would also be foiled by the Iraqi Armed Forces.
