Iraqi Army, popular committees advance west towards Syrian border

The Iraqi Army – backed by local popular committees – liberated the town of Al-Zukhaykhah after an intense battle with the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) on Saturday morning.

The Iraqi Army and their allies were able to take control of Al-Zukhaykhah after advancing west from the strategic town of Al-Hit; its capture on Saturday has put them within striking distance of the ISIS stronghold of Al-Baghdadi. Al-Baghdadi and the nearby city of Haditha are only 150 km east of the Syrian border-crossing at Al-Qa’im.

If this border-crossing is captured by the Iraqi Armed Forces, then ISIS will be without its most important border-crossing that links their two strongholds: Al-Anbar (Iraq) and Deir Ezzor (Syria).
