Iraqi FM welcomes Salehi at Baghdad airport

IRI acting Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi arrived in Baghdad Wednesday morning and was welcomed by his Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

Salehi is to meet and hold talks with senior Iraqi officials including President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and Zebari during his stay in the neighboring country.

During the talks, he will discuss issues of mutual interest with Iraqi officials and explore ways of expanding bilateral relations.

Earlier, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Ramin Mehmanparast explained that Salehi’s visit to Baghdad, at the head of a ranking political delegation, was aimed at offering felicitations to Iraqi officials on formation of their new government.

He added that the trip was also to pave the way for further promotion of cooperation and expanding ties between the two countries.

Upon arrival at Baghdad International Airport, Salehi said Wednesday that Iran would extend its all-out support for the people and government of Iraq.

‘Iran attaches importance to Iraq’s security and independence,’ Salehi added, stressing that Tehran would support ‘strengthening of a lasting security in Iraq as well as its national sovereignty and independence.’

‘A durable security would only be brought into Iraq by establishing a sovereign government,’ Salehi said.

Meanwhile, The Iraqi Foreign Minister said that he believed the prospect of Tehran-Baghdad relations was bright.
