Iraq’s new PM in Tehran to hold key bilateral, regional talks

New Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has arrived in the capital Tehran to hold key talks with Iranian officials on ways to bolster bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region.

Heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, Sudani arrived in Tehran on Tuesday and was officially welcomed by Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi.

Raeisi and Sudani plan to hold talks as political and economic delegation of the two countries will also discuss mutual relations and regional issues.

This is Sudani’s first official travel to a non-Arab country since he became prime minister in late October.

Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs, told the official IRNA news agency on Sunday that during Sudani’s day-long stay, Tehran and Baghdad will sign an agreement for the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

He noted that the two countries maintain a suitable level of cooperation thanks to the talks and exchange of visits among their officials, emphasizing that Sudani’s visit will mostly focus on economic and political issues as the expansion of ties with neighboring and regional states is a top priority for President Raeisi’s administration.
