Iraq’s political gridlock spawns terror

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has warned that the political gridlock in the country is conducive to the growth of militancy in Iraq.

Violence has raged on across the country as the March 7 parliamentary polls did not produce a clear winner to form a new government.

“Here you have a government paralysis, you have a political vacuum,” AP quoted Zebari as saying on Thursday.

“So in such environment, these terrorist networks flourish actually and would love to deepen division among Iraqi politicians to apportion blame on each other in order to create as much chaos as possible,” he added.

The comments came a day after multiple explosive attacks across the country killed dozens of people. Some politicians say the blasts, apparently against local government buildings and police headquarters, were aimed at delaying the formation of a new government.
