IRGC Unveils Latest Supersonic Anti-Ship Missile

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy displayed its latest supersonic anti-ship ballistic missile during the annual military parades in Southern Tehran on Thursday.

The smart missile, named “Persian Gulf”, traverses at supersonic speed and destroys targets 300km in distance.

Military experts said that ‘Persian Gulf’ is deemed as a step ahead in the IRGC Navy missile capability not just because of its higher velocity, but because the IRGC Navy missiles mainly belonged to the cruise class, “while Persian Gulf is a ballistic missile which flies vertically after being launched from a platform on the ground”.

“Persian Gulf enjoys a combined guidance system,” experts said, and explained, “Its search and targeting system locks on the target only in the final phase, giving enemy vessels no chance of escape.”

The solid-fuel missile has a 650kg warhead and has been designed by the research center of the IRGC Aerospace Force and mass-produced by the Defense Ministry.

The smart, solid-fuel anti-ship missile was displayed during the military parades at the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the Late Imam Khomeini, in Southern Tehran today.

The parades mark the start of the Week of Sacred Defense, commemorating Iranian sacrifices during the 8 years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s.

Each year, the Iranian Armed Forces display the country’s latest military achievements and products in nationwide parades on September 22.
