Islamic Awakening: Egyptians call for end to military rule

Egyptian protesters have called on the country’s military chief to step down, urging military rulers to hand over power to an elected government.

On Friday, protesters took to streets in the capital city, Cairo, demanding an end to the military rule in Egypt and the ouster of Hussein Tantawi, who now heads the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).

Marching to the Omar Makram Mosque, demonstrators shouted “Leave, Leave, Tantawi” and “Long Live Egypt” after Friday prayers.

The protesters said the army is not allowed to impose its ideas on the people.

They also announced that anti-junta protesters will return to the streets on January 25th.

Egyptians have in recent weeks staged mass demonstrations against the military rulers. SCAF took over after former president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a popular revolution in February 2011.
Protesters have been calling on the SCAF to hand over power to a civilian authority, accusing it of moving against the country’s revolution by using violence against civilians.
