Islamic Awakening: Revolutionary People in Yemen protest Saleh immunity

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Yemeni capital city of Sana’a, condemning the immunity granted to outgoing ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Revolutionary People on Sunday planned to march on the US embassy, but they were stopped by security forces.

In a similar protest on Saturday, thousands of Yemenis in the southern city of Taizz denounced the country’s parliamentary law that granted Saleh immunity from prosecution.

The lawmakers approved a bill giving Saleh “complete” and his aides “partial” immunity from any legal and judicial prosecution.

The legislation, which is part of a power transfer deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council, was approved despite objection from anti-regime protesters.

The protesters have been holding rallies for months to demand Saleh and his aides be prosecuted for the killing of protesters during the revolution that started last year.

Saleh has ruled the impoverished Arab state for more than 33 years.
