Islamic Iran Dispatches Humanitarian Aids to Somalia

Iran’s Red Crescent Society announced that it has sent a planeload of humanitarian aids to the Somali people as the North African country is fighting drought and famine.
The 40-ton cargo, included 20 tons of rice, 10 tons of cereals, five tons of canned food and five tons of sugar, was sent to the capital city of Somalia, Mogadishu, Thursday morning, said an IRCS’ statement.

Spreading famine and drought in the Horn of Africa, Somalia in particular, caused 11 millions of people to leave in tragic condition.

Iran has repeatedly announced its support for the people of Somalia stressing that it would spare no effort in helping Somalis survive the tragic situation.

More than 1.5 million Somalis have been internally displaced by a tug of war among the armed factions in the African country, which has been without an effective central government since the overthrow of the country’s former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Children’s Fund has suspended airlifting food to Somalia’s drought-affected regions due to “logistical” problems.

This comes as more than a dozen children died of hunger at Hwadag’s refugee camp in the northern district of Mogadishu earlier this week, reports say.

Some 10 million people are in dire need of emergency aid due to the prolonged drought in Somalia, the hardest-hit by the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years.
