Islamic Republic of Iran plans to build advanced submarines

Commander of IRI Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the country’s naval forces plan to build “modern submarines” for a stronger Iranian presence in international waters.

“The construction of modern submarines is underway according to the needs of the country’s naval forces for a stronger presence in international waters,” Sayyari said on Wednesday.

Sayyari noted that the naval forces are using new military equipments to “defend our country, interests and maritime borders.”

In April, the Navy announced plans to manufacture and deploy a new 500-ton submarine that is larger than Iran’s current Ghadir submarine.

The 120-ton Ghadir submarines joined the Iranian naval fleet in 2007. The Islamic Republic of Iran’s navy is believed to be operating more than ten of the light-weight subsurface vessels, primarily in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

In recent years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly declared that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that Tehran’s defense doctrine is based merely on deterrence.
