Israeli planes violate Lebanon airspace

Four Israeli warplanes have violated Lebanon’s airspace, flying over southern parts of the country in flagrant defiance of a UN Security Council resolution.

Lebanese Army Command Orientation Directorate issued a statement saying the four Israeli planes crossed into Lebanese airspace over the Mediterranean at 2:38 p.m. local time (1238 GMT) on Wednesday and conducted several unwarranted flights.

The warplanes departed the Lebanese airspace at 4:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) over the southern village of Alma Shaab.

Israel violates Lebanon’s airspace on an almost daily basis, claiming the flights serve surveillance purposes.

The Lebanese government, the Hezbollah resistance movement, and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, have repeatedly cited Israel’s air surveillance flights over Lebanon as blatant violations of UN resolution 1701 and the country’s sovereignty.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended Israel’s war of aggression against Lebanon in 2006, calls on Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
