Israeli strike against Syria would be sheer folly: Iran lawmaker

A senior Iranian lawmaker has hailed the power of the Syrian army in countering terrorists in Syria, saying any potential Israeli attack against the Arab country would be ‘sheer folly.’

“This is sheer stupidity that the Zionist regime (Israel) seeks to attack Syria,” Deputy Head of Iran’s Majlis Committee of National Security and Foreign Policy Ahmad Reza Dastgheib said on Sunday.

Any military attack against Syria will be met with a crushing response from the country, he warned.

Dastgheib pointed to the 33-day Israeli war on Lebanon and Tel Aviv’s 22-day war against Gaza, which both resulted in the Zionist regime’s defeat, and said that if a war breaks out in the region, it would cause another fiasco for the Israeli regime and would lead to its annihilation.

The remarks by the Iranian lawmaker come as Tel Aviv announced it would launch a military operation against Syria ‘if Damascus transfers missiles or chemical weapons to the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.’

“I have instructed the military to increase its intelligence preparations and prepare what is needed so that … (if necessary) … we will be able to consider carrying out an operation,” Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak said on Friday.

The Syrian government says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are behind the unrest and while the opposition accuses the government of killing protesters.

Damascus also says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and the security forces have been given clear instructions not to harm civilians.
