‘Israelis kill American-Israeli prisoner in shootout’

Israeli forces have shot to death an American-Israeli inmate, who had been detained for murder committed in the United States, in a shootout inside an Israeli prison, a report says.

Israeli special forces raided a cell inside which the American-Israeli, identified as Samuel Sheinbein, was hiding in the HaSharon (Rimonim) prison on Sunday after he shot several guards with a gun, according to a report by state-run BBC.

Sheinbein then opened fire at prison guards and the special forces, who returned fire, shooting him dead, according to the report.

Three guards were wounded in the incident, with hospital officials saying that one of them was in serious condition.

The report said that it was not yet clear how the inmate got hold of the gun.

Sheinbein was serving a 24-year sentence in Israel for a murder in Maryland, the US, in 1997. He had fled to Israel after the murder.

Sheinbein’s lawyers have claimed that he was under duress and that the Israeli prison officials had ignored their warnings.

In 1999, an Israeli court found Sheinbein, who was 19 at the time, guilty of killing and dismembering Alfredo Enrique Tello in the US. The Israeli regime refused to extradite Sheinbein to the US for trial.
