Jalili urges the West to build confidence

The turn is for the west to build trust and confidence and remove a mistrust its has formed in the mind of the Iranian people, Secretary of the IRI Supreme National Security Council told Le Figaro, adding that Iran has in the past carried out many confidence building measure.

Asked about the upcoming Istanbul talks, Jalili said Iran and the G5+1 had reached a transparent and unequivocal agreement on focusing the talks on the common grounds between the two countries.

He said the Islamic republic was seriously following the talks and has adopted a strategic approach towards the negotiations, adding that the talks would prove fruitful provided the G5+1 countries sit talks with the same mood and approach as Iran’s.

The diplomat in charge of the IRI talks with the group noted that some superpowers were following a confrontational approach towards the IRI but ultimately reached or would reach a dead-end. “Interaction would generate more grounds for cooperation,” he said.

Jalili noted that IRI enjoys undeniable potentials in many different spheres which might provide others with common grounds for further cooperation.

Asked about an IRI offer to diplomats of other countries to pay an inspection to the nuclear sites inside Iran, Jalili said the invitation signals Iran’s self confidence as well as the transparency of IRI activities. He noted however that Iran largely considered an inspection by signatories to the G 77 and the Non Aligned Movement while keeping an eye on providing an opportunity for other countries.

Asked about recent remarks by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in welcoming Iran’s right to nuclear enrichment, Jalili said Ms. Clinton is not the reference for construing the rights of other nations rather the rights of nations have been enshrined in the NPT.

Jalili also noted that Iran interprets any diplomatic gesture by other countries within an overall diplomatic texture formed by ctheir ollective gestures, measures and remarks in the past and present.

The senior Iranian negotiator expressed hope the western countries would realize the position and grandeur of the Islamic Republic and would not repeat their previous miscalculations in the upcoming opportunities for cooperation.
