Kuwait no launch pad for attacks

Amid Kuwait’s plans to buy Patriot missiles from the US, the country’s defense minister says Kuwait will not allow its soil to be used for striking other countries.

“We do not purchase arms to launch attacks on others and we do not accept attacks to be launched from our territories against other countries,” AFP quoted Sheikh Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabah as saying.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the defense minister said that Kuwait plans to buy Patriot missiles worth $900 million from the US.

However, he rejected claims that Kuwait will allow its territory to be a launch pad for attacks, and said, “The purchase is aimed at boosting the military’s capability and should not be misunderstood.”

The statement comes as Israel had earlier announced plans to strike arms depots and weapons manufacturing plants in Syria, claiming they belong to the Islamic resistance movement Hezbollah.

According to a report published in the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, Tel Aviv has escalated its military presence in the occupied Golan Heights and the Shebaa Farms.
