LA activists protest US police violence

Activists from across southern California gathered in downtown Los Angeles to protest police brutality.

Protesters marched from four different directions before converging on the headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The march features more than 600 coffins to represent the more than 600 people killed by Los Angeles law enforcement since the year 2000.

Mark Anthony Johnson says 28 percent of the people killed by police are African American, while 54 percent killed are Latino.

Johnson says communities are tired of being targeted by Los Angeles authorities.

Activists marched the coffins by Los Angeles City Hall. They also led a procession by the federal court building. But the target was the office of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Activists say county leaders have failed to hold law enforcement accountable.

Marchers delivered public records act requests to the police department and to the office of the sheriff.

They want to see data on use of force that law enforcement has yet to make available.

Activists also marched by the office of Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey. They’re calling for charges against the police officers responsible for the killings.
