Anniv of failed US operation marked

Hundreds of people in the central Iranian town of Tabas attended an anti-US rally to mark the 30th anniversary of a failed US ”rescue” operation in 1980.

The demonstrators shouted anti-US slogans and expressed their anger against what they called global arrogance.

The wreckage of a Sea Stallion helicopter that collapsed during the unsuccessful operation was on display as a symbol of US failure.

The rescue attempt, known as Operation Eagle Claw, had aimed to rescue Americans held hostage in Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

However, a sandstorm hit and brought down the helicopters, killing eight American servicemen.

The units involved in the operation were the US Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps.

The incident occurred during the administration of former US President Jimmy Carter.
