Leader Imam Khamenei pardons, commutes sentences of 3,552 convicts

Leader of the Islamic Ummah and Oppressed Imam Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed to pardon or commute the sentences of a large number of Iranian prisoners.

Ayatollah Khamenei on Thursday agreed to a request by Iran’s Judiciary Chief Hojjatoleslam Ebrahim Raeisi to pardon or reduce the sentences of 3,552 eligible inmates, who had been convicted at the country’s public and Islamic Revolution courts, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

The clemency was granted on the eve of the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Prophet Muhammad was born on the 17th day of the lunar calendar month of Rabi-ul-Awwal in 570 CE. The date coincides with the birth anniversary of Imam Ja’far Sadiq (PBUH), the sixth Shia Imam. This year, it falls on Friday, November 15.

According to the Sunni narrative, the birth date of the Prophet (PBUH) falls on Rabi-ul-Awwal 12.

As per a call made by the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, the week in between the two dates has been designated as “the Islamic Unity Week” to promote convergence among Muslims.
