Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People: Plots against Syria aim to break anti-Israel resistance

The Leader of the Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has reaffirmed Iran’s clear stance on the Syria issue, warning of plots by arrogant powers to break anti-Israel resistance by targeting Syria.

“The reality of the Syria issue is that the arrogant front intends to eliminate the connecting link of the [anti-Israel] resistance chain in the region which is located in the neighborhood of the Zionist usurper regime,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting with Iranian Hajj officials on Monday.

The Leader underlined preventing arms flow into Syria as the only solution to the country’s crisis.

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that it is natural for any government to counter the opposition when they receive arms from outside the country.

The Leader emphasized that if the Syrian opposition groups laid down their arms, it would be possible for them to demand the government to hear their views and allow them to express their positions.

Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says the armed groups are supported by the US and its allies in the region.

Iran has repeatedly voiced its opposition to any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, calling for inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections as the key to the settlement of the crisis in the country.
