Lebanese Army Captures Arms Ship Heading to Syria from Libya

Lebanese security sources told Al-Manar TV that the Lebanese navy intercepted on Friday an arms-loaded ship in north Lebanon.

The sources pointed out that the ship first took off from Libya, headed towards the Egyptian port of Alexandria and then arrived to the Tripoli port in Lebanon, and that it was carrying three containers of weapons including machine guns and heavy weapons.

The army transferred the ship, which is named Lutfallah II and carries the Sierra Leone flag, and its crew to Selaata port for investigation.

According to the source, the owner of the ship is a Syrian citizen called Mohammad K., its captain is his brother, and its proxy is a Lebanese citizen from Minaa region called Ahmad B.

Another source said that the arms were destined for the armed groups in Syria, especially that a large amount of arms is now being moved from north Lebanon to the Syrian territories.

Concurrently, the Lebanese Al-Akhbar daily quoted what it considered to be “credible sources” as saying that a Lebanese citizen from Tripoli headed to Egypt last month and met with the leadership of a Libyan armed group.

The paper indicated that the meeting took place in the presence of members of the “Syrian National Council”, adding that an agreement to supply the so-called “free Syrian army” with heavy arms in half its original price was reached.

The source further revealed that the Lebanese citizen stated during the meeting that there could be arrangement with the UNIFIL on the issue.
