Lebanon coping with refugee crisis

With the Syrian crisis now into its fifth year, more Syrian refugees have fled into neighboring countries. Recently, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees warned that the region will have nearly 4 million registered Syrian refugees in the near future. This comes as neighboring countries, specifically Lebanon, continue to bear the brunt of the mass influx.

The United Nations refugee chief, Antonio Guterres, who was in Lebanon this week, called on the international community to step up efforts to ease the plight of Syrian refugees who continue to live in very harsh conditions in Lebanon.

Refugees at this UNHCR headquarters in Beirut voiced their anger. Many were left in despair as they claimed the world has turned their back on them.

Syrian refugees in Lebanon make up nearly 30% of the Lebanese population. The host country is currently relying on donors in order to keep up with the refugee crisis.
Lebanon is host to nearly 1.2 million registered Syrian refugees. The government has time and again urged the international community to help with the crisis, calling it a shared responsibility. However, many wealthy nations have refused to allow in the refugees, and provide them with much-needed aid.
