London Tube strike goes into 2nd day

Commuters in the British capital are set for a second day of travel disruption as London Underground workers continue their strike in a long-running row over job cuts and ticket office closures.

According to IRIB, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) will end their 48-hour walkout on Wednesday evening.

However, they are expected to stage a further three-day strike from 9:00 p.m. local time on May 5 until the same time on May 8.

The strikes are in protest against major changes to the Tube announced by London Mayor Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL) in November last year.

Under the new plans, aimed at saving about £50 million a year, some 950 people will lose their jobs and 250 tube ticket offices across the network will be closed. But unions say the changes could threaten commuters’ safety and contribute to unemployment in the capital.
