Mark Duggan inquest to hear ‘police planted gun’ evidence

An eyewitness will accuse police of planting a gun close to the site where Mark Duggan was shot twice by a marksman.

Officers claimed they shot him on suspicion of planning an attack and in a shootout saying that he was in possession of a handgun, which was never found.

A witness’s evidence, however, suggests that a police officer took a gun from a shoebox inside a minicab and put it on grass beyond a set of railings.

The witness, known as Miss J, said the gun was placed 10ft to 20ft away from where the father-of-four was lying dead.

She said she was close enough to the scene of the incident that she could see the gloves’ color of a person who was doing CPR on Duggan.

“I need to explore with Miss J whether her evidence suggests a police officer took the gun from the minicab and planted it,” Ashley Underwood QC, counsel to the inquest, told jurors.

“All of that evidence will give you the opportunity to explore that possibility,” he added.

The 29-year-old black man’s shooting by the London police in August 2011, triggered the worst social unrest Britain faced in a generation, unleashing street protests, fighting with the police and arson attacks across England.
