Media urged to enlighten world on STL

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is a chance for the media to give the world true insight into this “kangaroo court,” Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Ezatollah Zarghami says.

In an interview with Mehr news agency on Tuesday, Zarghami said the US-backed tribunal probing the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafiq Hariri, as well as Lebanon’s developments, constitute a chance for independent media to let the world nations learn the truth behind the fake court.

“The important point about this tribunal is its discredit among the world nations, and the people do not believe in such Kangaroo courts,” the IRIB director reiterated.

The distrust came after Hezbollah’s Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah announced in July that he had been informed by the slain leader’s son and successor, Saad Hariri, that the US-sponsored STL is to accuse some Hezbollah members.

Nasrallah rejected the allegation and warned that the plot was part of “a dangerous project that is targeting the resistance.”

The Hezbollah leader presented video materials, captured by Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), as well as recorded confessions by Israeli fifth columnists, substantiating that Israel had masterminded the assassination.

Zarghami reiterated that such foreign schemes against the resistance of the Lebanese nation are counterproductive, arguing that world nations should be enlightened about such moves.

Some analysts believe that the US-backed STL is seeking to provoke tension between Lebanon’s Sunnis and Shias through indicting Hezbollah members.

Rafiq Hariri was killed along with more than 20 others in a massive car bombing in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on February 14, 2005.

The Washington-sponsored STL was established about two years later to investigate the incident.
