At least three Afghan policemen have been killed in a militant attack carried out in Afghanistan’s southern province of Kandahar, police say.

The incident took place on Wednesday when a relative of one of the victims opened fire on them on the outskirts of Kandahar city.

The Taliban militants, however, say the attacker was one of their supporters.

The attack came after 17 Afghan police officers were killed in another attack carried out by the Taliban militants on a police station in the Andar district of the eastern province of Ghazni late on Tuesday.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country, despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops.
