Millions of Mursi Supporters in the Arena

Millions of Egyptians have taken to the streets of Cairo to voice their support for President Mohamed Morsi’s expanded powers and the constitution that he is rushing to promote.

Millions of pro-Morsi demonstrators, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, gathered outside Cairo University on Saturday, waving Egyptian flags to show support for the incumbent president and the contested constitution.

On November 30, Egypt’s Constituent Assembly approved the final draft of the country’s first constitution after the ouster of dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi is expected to review the final draft of the new constitution and put it to referendum within two weeks.

Demonstrators were carrying banners that read, “The Muslim Brotherhood supports President Morsi’s decisions,” “Yes to stability” and “No to corruption.”

“There are people who want instability,” one demonstrators was quoted as saying about anti-Morsi protesters, adding, “There needs to be a constitution for there to be stability.”

Supporters of the president also staged similar rallies in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and the central Egyptian province of Assiut.

The pro-Morsi demonstration in the Egyptian capital comes one day after thousands of Morsi opponents converged on Liberation Square to protest against the president’s decree and the speedy adoption of the draft constitution.

On November 22, Morsi signed a controversial decree allowing him to “issue any decision or law that is final and not subject to appeal.” The declaration also prohibits courts from reviewing the president’s decisions.
