Scuffles have erupted between the supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and security forces in the capital Cairo, as Morsi’s court appearance was cancelled.

Clashes between the two sides erupted in Cairo’s Nasr City on Wednesday, as Morsi’s supporters were protesting his trial.

The protesters took to the streets, following a call by the anti-coup alliance to gather “in imposing marches” at the beginning of the trial.

Several protesters were injured as Egyptian security forces tried to disperse the crowd by firing rubber bullets and tear gas at them.

The clashes continue as Egyptian state TV reported that the Muslim Brotherhood leader’s second trial was cancelled, citing bad weather. The trial was adjourned to February 1.

Morsi was supposed to be flown to the Cairo police academy, where the court was set to be held. He is currently in custody near the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Egyptian first democratically elected president, who was toppled by a military coup last July, was to stand trial along with fourteen other Muslim Brotherhood figures for “inciting killing of protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012.” Morsi also faces charges of espionage and is accused of “planning prison breaks.”

The trial of the ousted president officially started in early November, but was quickly adjourned until January.

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood movement insist that Morsi is still Egypt’s legitimate leader and should be reinstated.

This is while the leaders, as well as the members and supporters of the movement, have been facing harsh crackdown by the military and its appointed interim government, since Morsi’s ouster.
