Mortar attack kills six, injure 40 in Damascus

shamseddin20130712153825563At least Six people have been killed and over 40 others wounded in Syria after foreign-backed militants fired mortar shells at civilian houses in the capital, Damascus.

The incident occurred on Friday when several mortar rounds fired by militants landed on a residential area in the capital’s al-Amaara neighborhood, SANA reported.

The injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police sources said the terrorist attack caused huge material damage to the houses in the area.

The attack comes amid reports of the army’s upper hand in fierce clashes with the foreign-sponsored militants as the government forces conduct more successful clearing operations against Takfiri extremists.

Earlier in the day, Syrian government forces inflicted heavy losses on insurgents in the Damascus suburbs of Barza and Hujaira. The army soldiers, backed by tanks and armored vehicles also advanced into the northeastern city of Deir ez-Zor, clashing with militants there.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence which the Syrian government says is being orchestrated from abroad.

There are also reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.
