Mortar shells have hit several residential areas in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, killing at least five people, Press TV reports.

According to the report on Thursday, some people were also injured in the Slemania, Jamilia and Hamdania neighborhoods.

There has been no claim of responsibility, but foreign-backed Takfiri militants operating inside the Arab country have in the past repeatedly targeted civilian areas with rockets.

Mortar attacks have killed and wounded many people with increasing frequency in recent weeks.

On December 24, at least four people were killed and 20 others wounded after foreign-backed militants fired mortar shells at residential areas in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Nine members of a Syrian family were killed after mortar shells fired by the militants hit their home in Aleppo’s al-Mashareqah district on December 5.

On December 4, an unnamed source at Aleppo Police Command said several mortar shells struck residential areas in the city, including al-Fourqan, al-Meridian, al-Fayd, al-Jamiliye and Bustan Kul Abb, killing 17 people.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – are supporting militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced so far due to the turmoil in the country.
