Ahmadinejad, Brahimi meet over Syria’s crisis


Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that dialogue and the achievement of national reconciliation in Syria are the basic means for reaching a solution.

Meeting UN Special Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, Ahmadinejad has warned that attempts to undermine Syria and dismember it would lead to instability and insecurity in the whole region for decades.

He calls for the importance that all parties acknowledge the Syrian people’s rights of freedom and national sovereignty.

On some parties’ claims of keenness on the Syrian people, President Ahmadinejad said “those who feel pity for the Syrians should insist on preparing convenient conditions for national reconciliation and bringing peace and security to Syria.”

The Iranian President underlined the necessity that all parties should work on achieving national accord in Syria without imposing their viewpoints on the Syrians.

He added that the means for solving the current situation in Syria are represented through everybody’s conviction that the solution can be reached in a stable and secure framework without attempts to impose others’ viewpoints.

He underlined that history never goes backwards, as everyone should realize that the age of empires will never come back, stressing the importance of respecting people’s rights and national sovereignty.

Ahmadinejad hoped that the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi would be useful and effective in achieving national accord and holding free elections in Syria.

He expressed readiness for cooperation with him in this regard.

Brahimi stressed the importance of bringing national accord in the country to maintain unity and sovereignty and restore security, referring to the different viewpoints and stances of ‘ the armed and non-armed opposition’ in Syria.
